Pliers can make us Selfless

In the kitchen, when we handle a hot chapati, we use a pair of tongs. But, when we handle a hot vessel, we use a pair of pliers. If we try to handle the vessel with the pair of tongs, we will invite a long bill for hospitalization payments. When Sri Rama descended in Tretayuga, He was born with twelve kinds of arts. But, when Sri Krishna was born in Dwaparyuga, he was blessed with sixteen arts. And, even Sri Krishna’s posture is not a usual one, he locks one of his legs with the other one, and places His flute in an abnormal way. This indicates that as the eras progressed, the humility and simplicity of the people declined, and thus Sri Krishna used more ‘talents’ to reform the society. Tretayuga was more simple than Dwaparyuga. Now, let us see a story about a bird, who sacrificed himself, for the sake of truth, in Tretayuga.

When Ravan was carrying Mother in his vehicle, Jatayu, a bird, flew in the air, and began pecking the body of Ravan. Ravan was annoyed by his persistent pecking. Ravan crossed his twenty arms, and lashed at the wings of Jatayu. The wings were detached from the body, and Jatayu fell on the ground. The other residents of the jungle were seeing the event, and were shivering in fear. When Ravan went away, all the animals and beasts assembled and offered sympathy to Jatayu. Some of his friends asked him the reason for going to Ravan, despite knowing the fact, that he could kill anyone. Jatayu replied that he didn’t value his life, for the sake of truth, and he enunciated the Name of Rama, and tried his best to help a helpless lady. All of his kins asked about the ways Rama could be informed, for Jatayu was left wingless. Jatayu replied boldly that Rama would come to him and if he had wings, he would have been forced to fly and search Rama.

Thus, it is said, whatever happens happens for the best. Jatayu inscribed his name in golden letters, for giving attempts to save a helpless lady, Mother Sita Herself. Handling life boldly and living for the Truth is the best way to attain Salvation. Mother could have freed Herself from the gross chains of Ravan. But, she kept the stubborn words of a naughty boy, Ravan, who could be better in virtues, after facing the aftermaths of his deeds. Thus, She went with Ravan, without a speck of retaliation.
