Don’t be a Goat

Once there lived a king. He had a goat with monstrous hunger. The king always tried to quench its hunger but in vain. One day, he announced, “I shall reward the person who can quench this goat’s belly.” Hundreds of people came and took the goat one by one. They made it graze across all the pastures and when the goat returned to the king’s palace, the king showed the green leaves, the goat leaped towards the grass. Hundreds of people tried but in vain. One saint came and said, “I shall quench this goat for sure.” The king said, “You can’t. Don’t bother yourself. This goat is quite monstrous in hunger.” The saint said, “I shall do it for sure.” The saint took the goat to his house and showed it some green leaves. Out of its desire, the goat leaped towards the leaves. Immediately, the saint lashed it with a stick on its face. The goat cried and couldn’t get the fodder. The saint showed the leaves again, it leaped but received severe lashes. All-day, the goat and the saint continued practicing. Till evening, the goat’s head inflamed out of lashes, and its belly shrank. The saint took the goat to the court and said, “the goat is satiated. You can check.” The king showed the leaves, but the goat saw the stick in the saint’s hand, and it didn’t leap towards the fodder.

Moral: We are like the goat. Maen…  I do this, I should do this, I did this… Our senses keep us engaged in the world, and we suffer from indigestion, receiving all kinds of food from all sense organs (even the sounds we hear are food for our ears). Lashes in life make us realize that something needs to be corrected. It is better to realize the true aim of life without receiving lashes.
