Buddha and Angulimala

During Buddha’s time, a man named Angulimala was a dacoit. Angulimala use to live in the jungle near Pasenadi. Angulimala used to murder others and then cut off their left little fingers to wear as a garland around his neck. Angulimala was very dangerous and everyone around was very scared of him. The people of Pasenadi stopped passing from the jungle where Angulimala use to live. Until then, Angulimala killed 999 people and was wearing 999 fingers in his garland. He was only one finger away from completing his pledge. Now nobody was passing through that jungle and outside the jungle, Pasenadi’s soldiers were guarding so he cannot go out of the jungle.

Budha came to the area where Angulimala was living at that time and started going inside the jungle. The soldiers guarding the jungle warned Buddha and asked him not to go inside. Hearing this, Buddha’s bhikkhus stayed outside, and Buddha went inside the jungle. Buddha said the poor guy has been waiting for years to cut one more finger and let me fulfil his desire. After so many years, when Angulimala heard the footsteps of a human being, he was thrilled but had a different feeling. Buddha was coming near him, so Angulimala started sharpening his sword. That day something happened, and he started thinking that he should not kill this person. It was very unusual for him. The feeling of not killing became stronger as the Buddha started coming closer. When he looked at Buddha closely, he had the impression that he was some kind of saint.

Their eyes met, and Angulimala recalled that someone had told him long ago that there is a saint called Buddha, and he can only change you. He told Buddha to stop, or he would kill him. Buddha said, “I have stopped for so many years. “Angulimala, you stop.” Angulimala thought that this person is crazy; he is walking and saying, “I have stopped.” I am sitting, and he is asking me to stop. Again, Angulimala said, “Crazy person, stop, or else I will kill you.” Buddha said, “Kill me, do your job, and fulfil your desire.” What are you waiting for? What will you kill? This body and mind are not mine; I am the soul, which cannot be killed. Hearing these words from Buddha, he was not able to do anything. The unconditional love and compassion of Buddha changed something inside Angulimala. Angulimala was so desperate that if his mother had come in front of him, he would have killed her as well. But he was not able to kill Buddha.

Buddha said to him, “Kill me.” “What are you waiting for?” Angulimala said, “I don’t know,” and he joined his hands and said to Buddha, “I cannot kill you.” He fell on Buddha’s feet. Buddha picked him up and said, “Come with me.” Angulimala walked with Buddha and became one of his bhikkhus.

Now, this news has spread to Azadshaturu, king of the Pasenadi. He was also scared of Angulimala. But he thought that at least Angulimala is now with Buddha, so we can kill him. The king of Pasenadi and his soldier came to Buddha and saw a man sitting there who fit the description of Angulimala. He was sitting next to Buddha and fanning him. King also felt some energy and was not able to kill Angulimala. The king also sat in front of Buddha. Buddha said, “You can kill Angulimala if you wish so.” The king said no, it’s fine, and he left for his kingdom.

Every bhikkhu has to go to the village and ask for bhiksha. One day Angulimala turn came, and we went to the village. When people saw him, they closed their doors, went to the terraces of their homes, and started throwing stones at him. He stood there and witnessed what was happening. He has been beaten with so many stones that he can see all the murders he committed in front of him. He fell and was half conscious. Buddha got to know about this, so he came to see Angulimala. He said, “Angulimala, what are you witnessing?” Angulimala said, “I am seeing you and me as one.” I am witnessing that this is a play, and it’s about to end now. He died in front of Buddha and got moksha.

Other bhikkhus asked Buddha what he became after his death. Buddha said he became one with God. Bhikkhus were surprised by this answer, they thought he killed so many people ruthlessly and lived with Buddha only for a few days. Then how did he get forgiven for this and become one with God? We can understand that God has forgiven him, but what about fulfilling his karma? How did his karmas become nil? Buddha explained that when stones were thrown at him, he realised that energy and understood that he was not this mind or body. He stood there and didn’t move from there, witnessing everything. He realised he was not this body or mind just before his death. When he stood there and witnessed everything, all his sins were washed away, and he became one with God.

From this incident, we can learn how a sinner like Angulimala became one with divinity just by being in the presence of an enlightened one.

बुद्ध और अंगुलिमाल

बुद्ध के समय अंगुलिमाल नाम का एक व्यक्ति डाकू था। अंगुलिमाल पसेनदी के पास जंगल में रहते थे। अंगुलिमाल दूसरों की हत्या करता था और फिर अपनी बाईं छोटी उंगलियों को काटकर अपने गले में माला के रूप में पहनता था। अंगुलिमाल बहुत खतरनाक था और आसपास के सभी लोग उससे बहुत डरते थे। पसेनदी के लोगों ने अंगुलिमाल के जंगल से गुजरना बंद कर दिया। तब तक अंगुलिमाल ने 999 लोगों को मार डाला था और 999 अंगुलियों को अपनी माला में धारण किया हुआ था। वह अपना संकल्प पूरा करने से केवल एक अंगुली दूर थे। अब उस जंगल से कोई नहीं गुजर रहा था और जंगल के बाहर पसेनदी के सैनिक पहरा दे रहे थे ताकि वह जंगल से बाहर न जा सके।

बुद्ध उस समय उस क्षेत्र में आ गए जहाँ अंगुलिमाल रह रहे थे और जंगल के अंदर जाने लगे। जंगल की रखवाली करने वाले सैनिकों ने बुद्ध को चेतावनी दी और उन्हें अंदर न जाने के लिए कहा। यह सुनकर बुद्ध के भिक्षु बाहर रुक गए और बुद्ध जंगल के अंदर चले गए। बुद्ध ने कहा कि बेचारा बरसों से इंतजार कर रहा है कि मैं एक और अंगुली काट लूं और मैं उसकी इच्छा पूरी कर दूं। इतने वर्षों के बाद जब अंगुलिमाल ने मनुष्य के कदमों की आहट सुनी तो वह रोमांचित तो हुआ लेकिन एक अलग अनुभूति हुई। बुद्ध उनके निकट आ रहे थे, तो अंगुलिमाल ने तलवार की धार तेज करनी शुरू कर दी। उस दिन कुछ हुआ और वह सोचने लगा कि कहीं इस व्यक्ति को मार न दूं। उसके लिए यह बहुत ही असामान्य था। जैसे-जैसे बुद्ध करीब आने लगे, हत्या न करने की भावना प्रबल होती गई। जब उसने बुद्ध को गौर से देखा तो उसे आभास हुआ कि वह कोई संत है।

उनकी आंखें मिलीं, और अंगुलिमाल को याद आया कि किसी ने उन्हें बहुत पहले कहा था कि बुद्ध नाम के एक संत हैं, और वे ही आपको बदल सकते हैं। उसने बुद्ध से कहा कि रुक ​​जाओ, नहीं तो वह उसे मार डालेगा। बुद्ध ने कहा, “मैं इतने वर्षों से रुका हुआ हूं। “अंगुलिमाल, तुम रुक जाओ।” अंगुलिमाल ने सोचा कि यह व्यक्ति पागल है, यह चल रहा है और कह रहा है, “मैं रुक गया हूं।” मैं बैठा हूं, और वह मुझे रुकने के लिए कह रहा है। फिर, अंगुलिमाल ने कहा, “पागल, रुक जाओ, नहीं तो मैं तुम्हें मार डालूंगा।” बुद्ध ने कहा, “मुझे मार डालो, अपना काम करो, और अपनी इच्छा पूरी करो।” आप किस का इंतजार कर रहे हैं? क्या मारोगे ? यह शरीर और मन मेरा नहीं है; मैं आत्मा हूँ, जिसे मारा नहीं जा सकता। बुद्ध की ये बातें सुनकर वह कुछ नहीं कर पा रहा था। बुद्ध के बिना शर्त प्यार और करुणा ने अंगुलिमाल के अंदर कुछ बदल दिया। अंगुलिमाल इतना हताश था कि अगर उसकी माँ उसके सामने आती तो वह उसे भी मार डालता। लेकिन वह बुद्ध को नहीं मार सका।

बुद्ध ने उससे कहा, “मुझे मार डालो।” “आप किस का इंतजार कर रहे हैं?” अंगुलिमाल ने कहा, “मुझे नहीं पता,” और उसने हाथ जोड़कर बुद्ध से कहा, “मैं तुम्हें नहीं मार सकता।” वह बुद्ध के पैरों पर गिर पड़ा। बुद्ध ने उसे उठाया और कहा, ‘आओ मेरे साथ। अंगुलिमाल बुद्ध के साथ चले और उनके भिक्षुओं में से एक बन गए।

अब यह खबर पसेनदी के राजा आजादशतुरु तक फैल गई। उन्हें अंगुलिमाल से भी डर लगता था। लेकिन उसने सोचा कि कम से कम अंगुलिमाल अब बुद्ध के पास है, तो हम उसे मार सकते हैं। पसेनदी के राजा और उनके सैनिक बुद्ध के पास आए और उन्होंने वहां एक ऐसे व्यक्ति को बैठे देखा जो अंगुलिमाल के वर्णन के अनुरूप था। वह बुद्ध के पास बैठा पंखा चला रहा था। राजा को भी कुछ ऊर्जा महसूस हुई और वह अंगुलिमाल को मारने में सक्षम नहीं था। राजा भी बुद्ध के सामने बैठ गया। बुद्ध ने कहा, “आप चाहें तो अंगुलिमाल को मार सकते हैं।” राजा ने कहा नहीं, ठीक है, और वह अपने राज्य के लिए निकल गया।

प्रत्येक भिक्षु को गाँव में जाकर भिक्षा माँगनी पड़ती है। एक दिन अंगुलिमाल की बारी आई, और हम गाँव चले गए। जब लोगों ने उसे देखा, तो उन्होंने अपने दरवाजे बंद कर लिए, अपने घरों की छतों पर चले गए और उस पर पत्थर फेंकने लगे। वह वहीं खड़ा रहा और देखा कि क्या हो रहा है। उसे इतने पत्थरों से पीटा गया है कि वह अपने सामने की गई सभी हत्याओं को देख रहा है। वह गिर गया और आधा होश में था। बुद्ध को इस बात का पता चला, तो वे अंगुलिमाल को देखने आए। उन्होंने कहा, “अंगुलिमाल, तुम क्या देख रहे हो?” अंगुलिमाल ने कहा, “मैं आपको और मुझे एक के रूप में देख रहा हूं।” मैं देख रहा हूँ कि यह एक नाटक है और अब यह समाप्त होने वाला है। वह बुद्ध के सामने मरा और मोक्ष प्राप्त किया।

अन्य भिक्षुओं ने बुद्ध से पूछा कि उनकी मृत्यु के बाद वे क्या बने। बुद्ध ने कहा कि वे भगवान के साथ एक हो गए। भिक्खु इस जवाब से हैरान थे, उन्होंने सोचा कि उसने इतने लोगों को बेरहमी से मार डाला और कुछ दिनों के लिए ही बुद्ध के साथ रहे। फिर वह इसके लिए कैसे क्षमा हो गया और भगवान के साथ एक हो गया? हम समझ सकते हैं कि भगवान ने उसे माफ कर दिया है, लेकिन उसके कर्म को पूरा करने के बारे में क्या? उसके कर्म शून्य कैसे हो गए? बुद्ध ने समझाया कि जब उन पर पत्थर फेंके गए, तो उन्हें उस ऊर्जा का एहसास हुआ और वे समझ गए कि वह यह मन या शरीर नहीं हैं। वह वहीं खड़ा रहा और सब कुछ देखते हुए वहां से नहीं हिला। अपनी मृत्यु से ठीक पहले उन्होंने महसूस किया कि वह यह शरीर या मन नहीं थे। जब वह वहां खड़ा हुआ और सब कुछ देखा, तो उसके सारे पाप धुल गए और वह भगवान के साथ एक हो गया।

इस घटना से, हम सीख सकते हैं कि अंगुलिमाल जैसा पापी कैसे एक प्रबुद्ध व्यक्ति की उपस्थिति में ही दिव्यता के साथ एक हो गया।
