This write-up is created to give a simplified conceptual approach to understand the Gita.

Steps to read the table: The numbers in the subscripts denote the sequence of dialogues to be read. The first column indicates the Words of Sri Krishna, the second of Arjuna, and the third one indicates the conclusions of the dialogues in a row. For the readers on mobiles, they can read this blog easily in landscape mode.
Sri Krishna | Arjuna | Concept and conclusion |
Do your duties for the sake of duties.(1) | I can’t do it. They are my kins. Why should I do so?(2) | Arjuna is not ready to accept the words. |
You have to carry out your responsibilities, without any attachment.(3) | I can’t do it. (4) | He is still obstinate. Lord is trying to elaborate Karma. (context of karma yoga) |
If you believe that God is One, and if you are seeing all your kins as segregate entities, then you are an hypocrite.(5) | Yes, I know that I have to carry out my responsibilities. But, aspirations for feasible results are inevitable.(6) | Arjuna is speechless. Lord amalgamates yoga in the concept of karma. This is a very deep message. |
Detachment is very important. All your good deeds may not yield good fruits in your life.(7) | But, you said, ‘what you sow shall you reap’.(8) | The concept of fruits gained in life and nature of seeds of the fruits reaped is explained. |
Yes, I told you the concept of fruits. But, I didn’t say that you will receive the fruits from the same scenario, immediately. You are not limited by time and space. Your thoughts limit you. (9) | What am I? And, if Lord has to do all the actions and even give the fruits, then why should I do the actions? (10) | The nature of the deeds may yield results immediately, or might be sown for future ‘benefits’. You are not limited to this life. You are the Soul. The fruits of the actions are mainly governed by Lord’s will. |
Breathing is also a karma. You have to do the actions. You can’t leave the actions. They are mandatory for for your life to foster. Lord does the actions through you. (11) | This means, if some wrong deeds happen through me, then those shall be done by Lord?(12) | Lord is trying to elaborate the extent to which we have to merge with actions, being performed. |
No, you have a free will. When you use it, you become a sufferer and all fruits bother you. (13) | Why should I perform the basic labilities of life and survival? Through all the botherations of body, I getting attached to the body and mind.(14) | The concept of mind is introduced. Using the mind, for carrying out the responsibilities make us the sufferers. |
Consider the physical body as the house of soul. The external senses, are the windows and doors. They take their objects and thus, cause accumulation of junk in the mind. That is why you should do the actions, to clean the house. The actions shall clean. But, this cleaning is not in your hands.(15) | I cannot do the tasks without thinking about feasible results. How and why should do it? Results become inevitable.(16) | Functions of Soul |
You have forgotten the concept of karma. Your past deeds influence the nature of the fruits you reap. If you will do the actions, you shall suffer. Do not do the actions.(17) | Should I good deeds? If my intentions are good, then should I do the actions?(18) | The nature of immediate deeds might not yield immediate fruits. |
Performing good deeds in not a voluntary step. Consider that you are walking over pavement. Suddenly, you see an old man, carrying lots of luggage. You run towards him to help him. The man gives you a stern look, and shouts at you, asks you to go away and call police.(19) | _CONFUSED TOTALLY_(20) | Everything depends on Lord. |
Let us go to Bhakti Yoga. Do your actions, but renounce the mentality that you are doing it.(20) | How should I proceed?(21) | You are not the doer, God is the doer. Fuel in a vehicle is more important (Soul-Body). |
You are the Soul. Surrender your mind to the Soul within, and you shall be free. Let It work through you, for you.(22a) | ‘He listens….’ | Let Thy will be done. |
Even if you are killing someone of the battle field, it’s fruits shall not bother you.(22b) | You said that if we do good to someone, and do not receive good fruits, it means that the past fruits are influencing us. (23)
No, the actions of the second person might be building up. (24) | Then, we shall remain stuck in the whirlpool of actions and reactions.(25) | Climax of Bhakti Yoga |
This makes the practice of Bhakti Yoga, inevitably important. The practice can only redeem you from the twirling tornadoes of fruits and seeds.(26) |
A lay-man illustration to prove this table-
Conversation continues, aspect of Gyana Yoga is elucidated by Sri Krishna
Sri Krishna | Arjuna | Concept and conclusion |
The freewill is the Jeevaatma, and the Self is Paramaatma. Once the freewill is surrendered to the Self, the Jeevatma becomes Paramaatma.(1) | How will I realize it?(2) | Arjuna understands the concept of being a yogi |
The practice of meditation and penance is the way. The path of Neti indicates the way of accessing the Self by negating the delusions and illusions, and searching the Answer.(3) | (He continues listening keenly.)(4) | Then, Krishna shows His pure blissful form to Arjuna, the opulent form. |
See this form, and even see the fact that all your kins are killed, and tilt your head.(5) | -AMAZED-(6) | Krishna shows him the Truth, and even His own magnificent form. At the end of the Vishwaswaroop darshan, the distinct form of humanly Krishna disappeared and the One Krishna Consciousness prevailed in the cosmos. Arjun saw nothing except Krishna everywhere, even beyond the horizon. Then, Normalcy was gained. |
Did you see the Truth?(7) | No, you were playing the role of a magician. You reverted my mind, to your form, and then soon I returned back to the normal vision.(8) | Arjuna is unable to believe the notion. |
O Parth! I have illuminated the path, you are ought to trace it, and reach the destination. I cannot trace the path or rather force your feet on the road, you have to take the steps.(9) | How should I do it?(10) | The target is to be achieved by the person himself. A sweet given to a dumb, cannot be elucidated by him. |
I told you about Bhakti Yoga. O Parth! Now, treat everyone as you treat yourself. Love all as you love yourself. Loving yourself is Yama, and social behavioral conducts come under Niyama.(11) | LISTENING KEENLY | Sri Krishna is elucidating about the Ashtang Yoga, viz, yama, niyama, aasan, pranayam, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and samadhi. These practices make us pure. |
Master a particular posture and try remain in that state for several hours. This is aasana. Through this practice, you shall be able to keep your body healthy, and aches won’t dwindle your mind.(12) | LISTENING KEENLY | Ensured health and unstirred sustenance in a particular posture redeem us from physical ailments. Then, mind can be approached easily. |
Breath cautiously. You will be able to balance your emotional and mental turbulences. The recorded breathing, in an accord shall make you tame your mind. This needs the practice of Pranayama.(13) | LISTENING KEENLY | Conscious breathing reduces the ripples in our minds. Thoughts diminish. |
Then comes Dharana. You shall be able to perceive the Entirety, either a Form of Formless. The Eternity will gain an identity in your existence.(14) | LISTENING KEENLY | We can perceive the Form or Formless, as a Divine Deity and then proceed towards meditation. |
Meditate on the perceived Eternity. This is Dhyana.(15) | LISTENING KEENLY | Meditating on the Form or Formless |
You will need Sanyama, that is Self-control to achieve these stratas of existence. And…, self-controls includes conquering the lust. Brahmacharyavrt (practice of celibacy) is the Ultimate path for becoming a Yogi, a Jitendriya (one who has conquered his senses).(16) | LISTENING KEENLY | Brahmchrayavrt or celibacy is the most important practice in the path of spirituality. |
You also need dhairya, viz, patience. Perseverance and tolerance become all inclusive. Conquering the mind is not easy. You may need several births to achieve it. It depends on you, O Arjuna, the way you sow the seed. You will surely reap amazing results, progressively, even in the next births (if needed).(17) | Do we have to make more births, even after this present birth?(18) | The earlier we sow the seed of detachment, faster we shall reap the results of Bliss. |
Yes, Arjuna. You are capable of seeing the present birth, but I am aware about all your births and even mine. I also gave knowledge of Eternity, to the suns passing by.(19) | O Madhusudan! How can you give knowledge to the sun, who is unstirred form its path from the origin of the universe?(20) | Arjuna is confused about the way Sri Krishna gave the knowledge of Eternity to the ever-lasting sun. |
I am aware about the present, past and the future.(21) | O Krishna! I have surrendered myself to Thee. I am practicing. But, still confusions are present.(22) | After seeing the Vishwaswaroopa, Arjuna is drifted away from several doubts, but is not free from them. |
In the practice of Dhyana, the people receive siddhis, powers. They become capable of healing, levitation, spells and the rest. As soon as, people receive these powers, they start using them as their personal assets. Ego conquers them, and are stirred form the path to Infinity.(23) | Why are given these sidhhis, though we are just few steps away from the destination?(24) | People dwindle form their paths, and become yogabrishtha, viz, the penance become vacant. The powers are nothing but the toys to children. The person is forced to take another birth. He is born with the powers he had achieved, but has to get rid of them as well, by returning on the path to samadhi. |
O Arjuna! These are the part of tests. I give them the toys, to test them, if they are lured towards the mystical assets. I am his, and he is mine, but the Ultimate union is possible only by renouncing everything, even the supernatural energies. Nothing should remain except the hunger for the Infinity.(24) | LISTENING KEENLY | In this present era, people do yoga to acquire these siddhis. The name and fame as a healer or a levitator is their aim. Hunger of name and fame ruins us. |
Then, the state of samadhi appears. There are several types of experience while being in samadhi.(25) | LISTENING KEENLY
One of them is bhava samadhi. The person is present in the physical abode, but the remembrance becomes inevitable. Hearing the Name of Lord, brings tears in his eyes, hair-on-end experience appears. He becomes unaware of his physical existence, but for some time. Once he comes out of it, he behaves as a normal man. (26) | LISTENING KEENLY | We can even experience its tints, when we are in proximity of a Satguru. |
Another one is jada samadhi or nirvana. He remains in the physical body for twenty-one days, but the responsiveness of the gross body become zero (He may show some signs of life for few minutes in a day, and then becomes numb as a corpse). He is aware of the Krishna Consciousness, and then he merges with the Eternity. He leaves the body and mingles with Infinity.(27) | LISTENING KEENLY | This explanation is about the Nirvana. |
The beings who appeared as incarnations on the planet for the goodwill of the humanity, descend to the fifth level of existence, to the Vishuddhi strata and carry out duties to serve the planet.(28) | LISTENING KEENLY | This is the case for the Incarnations like, Buddha, Mahavir, Nanak, Guruji and many more. It is said that Baba Nanak took birth seven times, on the planet. They are already One, but they visited the Earth for humanity. |
These incarnations are the ones, who become sturdy enough to bear the sufferings of other. The humans became free from the fruits of their deeds, and only have to suffer the prarabdha.(29) | LISTENING KEENLY | Jesus was crucified, Prophet Mohammed-peace-be-upon-him underwent several pangs. They underwent all the sufferings, to redeem us from pains. When a person is initiated by a Satguru, he is freed from several sufferings. The Satguru burns the sufferings in His abode. |
But, O Parth! The aspect which shall resonate in your mind at the time of death, you will become the same. If you will remember me, then you shall surely merge with me.(30) | LISTENING KEENLY | Thus, the meditative stage should expand itself 24/7. We have not attained the samadhi yet, and we are even far behind in the practice of ashtang toga. Hence, the diurnal remembrance is the only key. Guru Granth Sahib says, “Naam Jap, Kirat kar, aur vandke chakh”. Chant all day long, with dedication in the worldly duties, and serve the planet with the bounties we receive. |
O Arjuna! Give off the assets. Charity is the ultimate key. If you give with your right hand, left hand should not know it. Even, the receiver should not feel that he is receiving something. Ego shouldn’t conquer you, as if you are a successful philanthropist.(31) | (LISTENING KEENLY | The opportunity of being a philanthropist is the grace of the Almighty. We have no rights to claim our charitable acts. Even, the idol worship is acceptable, if we feel that Lord is in the Idol. But, the imposition of an idol as Lord is hypocrisy. Worshipping with rituals should be with a prayer to Almighty, for He may carry us beyond the chains of Form to the Formless. |
Bhakti Yoga needs further explanation. Mother Radha is the incarnation of love. She was a deep devotee of Sri Krishna, as she loved him, and her breathes fluctuated for Lord Krishna. This is real devotion. Until we love someone, we obey him or her. The quality of love is sacrifice, without a speck of expectation.
Sri Krishna | Arjuna | Conclusion |
O Parth! Become a devotee. Though it is very difficult. It is easy to die for Lord, which is out of cowardice but it is cumbersome to resonate in the will of Lord. Try with some scriptures. Swaadhyaay might be helpful for you.(1) | O Madhusudan! This option doesn’t appeal me. Can the illiterates attain Lord?(2) | Lord is teaching Arjuna to become a devotee. The concept of Navdha bhakti is introduced. First is swaadhyaya (self introspection through scriptures). |
Good, it is true, Reading generates ego and we go away from him. Listen to the words of Guru. The one who has realized the light (-ru in term Guru) is Guru. Gu- means darkness and -ru means light. The Guru is beyond gender.(3) | Yes, but all cannot attain a Guru. Then what should we do?(4) | Lord tells him to listen and obey the words of the Guru. Second step explained. |
When the disciple is ready, Guru comes to him by himself. But, until you receive the blessings, repeat the name of Lord. Chant incessantly.(5) | O Keshav! I can take your Name as I can see you. All can’t do it. It is quite a bland process. It is difficult to chant the Name who can’t be seen immediately.(6) | Chanting explained.(Third) |
Start with baby steps. You might start with a mind of a hypocrite. But, the Name is true, It will unveil the results, at the needed time.(7) | No, why should I repeat the name? You said that he loves me seventy times more that a mother’s love. Shouldn’t he come to me?(8) | Sri Krishna explains that hypocrisy on our part is neglected, once we start with dwindling steps. |
If you are not easy with reading or chanting. Serve the Guru. Whatever actions you do, think that you are serving Lord.(9) | Oh.. This is a good choice, indeed. (After few minutes) No, I can’t do it. I can only serve the Guru, once I see him. I cannot see Guru in all the creations. I cannot see you in my enemies. What should I do?(10) | Gurupad seva is the forth part. If we are cleaning the house, we should think we are serving Lord, eating, we should think we are offering it to Lord. |
Surrender yourself to the Divine Self within. The soul which is within you, is also in all the people, even in Duryodhana. If you will feel the Energy in yourself, you will also become capable of seeing the same Energy in all creations. But, this comes through incessant practice.(11) | -LISTENING KEENLY- | We cannot segregate Karma yoga and Bhakti yoga. God is love and light. It is our basic nature to love all, and to be loved. Even if we have not seen Lord, we can manifest the love. Our job is to do karma, without any expectations. Think about Him, avoid the rubbish. |
Imagine a baby, who cries. Mother takes care of him. She will breastfeed him, tidy up his clothes and clean his place. Once he sleeps, mother goes for work. She keeps a parallel eye on him. As he wakes up or cries, she leaves the task and lifts the baby up in her arms and kisses him. Imagine the same with a mother, amplified seventy times. Establish a live connection with him. Talk to him.(12) | LISTENING KEENLY | She sorts all the problems, once we cry. Until we cry, she doesn’t bother, she is happy. We all are asleep. We ought to cry, for she lifts us up in her arms. Until we have realized the Self, we are the corpses. A journey from being a shiv from a shav (corpse) is prime. |
So, Arjuna, do the tasks for Him.(13) | LISTENING KEENLY | Karma Yoga |
Then, a stage should appear where ‘I’ should diminish to zero.(13) | I am uneasy yet. | Doership is a biggest sin. |
O Arjun! Surrender and you shall rejoice. | If I surrender, what will happen? | Sri Krishna unveils the essence of Gita. |
O Parth! You surrender to me, and I will bear all the burdens of materialistic and | LISTENING KEENLY | Yogkshema vahamyaham.. |
Very well written… We cannot be one with the God with the senses, mind and body but these are means to keep our focus on God. Turning inwards and realising that power within gives us liberation and free from this life death cycle.
Thank you very much for the wonderful post. This website is like a easy version of Bhagvath Geeta, Quran and Bible. Very helpful to the beginners like me.
