A disciple went to Swami Ramakrishna Paramhamsa and asked, “How many types of Gurus exist?” Thakur Ji said, “Firstly! Let me tell you about the types of doctors. Doctors of one sort, prescribe you some medicines, and.. his job is done. He never bothers if you take the medicine. A doctor of another sort examines you keenly and prescribes you the medicines. Then, he asks you politely, to eat the medicines. This type of doctor also forgets later. The third type of doctor is very strict. He examines you and prescribes medicines. He makes sure that you eat the medicines. If you don’t do so, he forces his own hand into your mouth to feed the tablets earnestly. Now, which type of doctor is the best? Now, think about it, son! Now, listen to the three types of gurus. Guru of one sort finds you that you are ready, and you receive the initiation. He gives you the name and asks you to chant it. That’s it! Another type of Guru explains to you very politely about chanting the name. He is very gentle with you. The third type of Guru makes sure that you chant the name. If you don’t do so, he hits you hard. Now, it’s your choice, which treatment you deserve.”
गुरु और डॉक्टर- एक शिष्य स्वामी रामकृष्ण परमहंस के पास गया और पूछा, “गुरु कितने प्रकार के होते हैं?” ठाकुर जी ने कहा, “पहले! मैं आपको डॉक्टर के प्रकार के बारे में बताता हूँ। एक प्रकार के डॉक्टर आपको कुछ दवाएँ देते हैं, और .. उनका काम हो गया। आप दवा लें या न लें, वे परवाह नहीं करते। एक अन्य प्रकार का डॉक्टर आपकी जाँच करता है और आपको दवाइयाँ देता है। फिर, वह विनम्रता से आपसे दवाएँ खाने के लिए कहता है। इस प्रकार का डॉक्टर भी बाद में भूल जाता है। तीसरे प्रकार का डॉक्टर बहुत सख्त होता है। वह आपकी जाँच करता है और दवाएँ लिखता है। वह सुनिश्चित करता है कि आप दवाइयाँ खाएँ। यदि आप ऐसा नहीं करते हैं, तो वह अपने हाथ को ज़ोर से आपके मुँह में डालकर गोलियाँ खिलाता है। अब, किस प्रकार का डॉक्टर सबसे अच्छा है? अब इसके बारे में सोचो, बेटा! अब, तीन प्रकार के गुरुओं के बारे में सुनो। एक प्रकार के गुरु आपको पाते हैं कि आप तैयार हैं, और आप दीक्षा प्राप्त करते हैं। वह आपको नाम देते हैं और आपको इसका जाप करने के लिए कहते हैं। बस! एक अन्य प्रकार के गुरु आपको नाम जपने के बारे में बहुत विनम्रता से समझाते हैं। वह आपके साथ बहुत कोमल हैं। तीसरे प्रकार के गुरु यह सुनिश्चित करते हैं कि आप नाम जपें। यदि आप ऐसा नहीं करते हैं, तो वह आपको जोर से मारते हैं। अब, यह आपकी पसंद है कि आप किस इलाज के लायक हैं।”
