When the sun enters the Capricorn Zodiac (Makar Rashi), we celebrate Makar Sankranti. It is an auspicious day. In this year 2022, there is Vivekananda Jayanti on 12th January, Ekadashi on 13th January, and Makar Sankranti on 14th January. These triplet days are the boon for us, who wish to proceed in the path of spirituality. The precious Brahma Muhurta in the dusk and dawn must be preserved all these days.
People fly kites on this day and enjoy til laddoos (sesame-seed sweets). It is scientifically proven that the body synthesizes the maximum percentage of Vitamin D if we are exposed to the sunlight of this day. That is the science behind enjoying kite flying competitions on the terraces.
Traditionally, we should prepare porridge (khichri) prepared with urad dal (split though husked black gram lentils) and rice. It is the most nutritious diet, requiring the least fuel and resources. The porridge can be adorned with certain vegetables to add properties.
And last but not least the til laddoos are very important. They impart physical, mental and, spiritual well-being. If we can’t find til laddoos, we can go for plain sesame seeds and jaggery, as a tiny snack daily, in this cold month.
