Nishkaam Karma Yoga

What is this term? Krishna was born, in the human form. He was unbound from all debts, and was free. We are born to get rid of the debts. The acquaintances we encounter in several births are merely the ones from whom we borrow, in terms of actions. We may feel that we were born with lose hands and will die with lose hands, but actually we owe several things to our kins and acquaintances. Exchanging hard or rather soft words or emotions with other make us owe several entities. Soft words or emotions are like chain made of gold, and hard words are like that of a bland metals. But, it is a bondage, slavery. When we make others feel good by expressing their goodness, in an exaggerative manner, we actually express our false affinity with the people. The notion of ‘me and mine’ becomes dominant. We often feel that our responsibilities cannot be accomplished in our absence. Let us visit a cemetery in our mind, and see the cabins labelled as ‘RIP’. They were once the people who were alive, and expressed their affinity to the world, posed themselves as the doers on the planet. But, after their death, the world is working effectively, without a speck of change. Death shall become a grand moment if we become free from attachments, living in the materialistic world. If we realize the notion that we are mere debtors to the acquaintances we encounter, we will be free. We should not be moved by good and bad lashes, thrown upon us. If we retaliate to the so-called positive or negative experiences, we will be spin another mesh of thoughts around our existences, like the spider. Krishna took an incarnation to free us from the ‘world wide web’.

We may say that a wall or a boulder is also free, as it does not react to emotions or words. Even, several species of creatures devour their young ones, if they are forced to starve. We may think that they are detached to their children, and the world. No, it is not the case. All are under the spell of the ferocious delusion (maya). This is not a selfless work.

Whatever we do in the world, it depends on the results. If we study, we want good marks, if we cook well, we want a standing ovation, if we work hard, we want good sapling out of the sweat we perspire. These expectations send us to the room of doom. Doing all the actions without a speck of expectation of fruits, being detached to all the aspects is the best. What is the way to bring this phrase into action? It is very easy to enunciate the morals, but the practical approach is absent. Sri Krishna has delivered the Gita, amidst the field of Kurukshetra, during the war of Mahabharat. The same battle is in action within all of us, at this very moment. We fight with our own thoughts, to reach to the state of bliss. We dwell in the state of a donkey, when we are lazy. We prefer the monkey mind, while we work. Force makes us stay like a butterfly, for few hours or so, and then we return to the basic monkey mind. Let us consider an illustration to understand it better. A mother cooks meals for her child, with deep love and care. But, the focus is like a butterfly for sometime. The focus is governed by the thought of “me and mine”. This is not a selfless service. This needs practice.

We should begin an job with the sense that we are not the doers, Allah is the doer. We often say that we sit for meditation. Meditation is not an action to be performed, rather it is to be done with utmost attention, and free mind. Meditation is the practice of remembering the true doer in all actions. The Lord is the doer, we are merely the representatives, Lord is utilizing the bounties or assets, for the betterment of the planet. A selfless action is the act which imparts benefits to the beings, including ourselves. It is said that we cannot please others. This is true. But, if we surrender the actions at the Divine feet of Lord, and let Him do the tasks for us, we will become capable of doing selfless service. Gradual practice of selfless tasks free us from attachments and we enjoy the bliss. This practice breaks the chains of “me and mine”, we love all equally. If we give retaliation in response to an act, we become bound further. Jesus Christ, Buddha, Prophet Mohammed (p.b.u.h.) and the rest visited the planet to guide us towards the right path. All of them faced all the phases of life, especially the pains, and showed the right path. All the incarnations faced the pains, and proved that they were beyond body and mind, these were under the control of Lord. Until and unless we feel that Lord is the doer, we will continue suffering. If we do a job, we should not do it as if a burden is loaded over us. We feel fatigued, if we feel that we are doing the actions. The infinite energy of Allah is immense, inexhaustible. The Krishna, the Gita, the Allah is within us. The feeling that the omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent is working through us, is an inevitable aspect to be practiced.

If we start working for others, who cannot give us anything in return, can make us selfless. Even, the ones who cannot give us a piece of appreciation, can reap selflessness in our existences. Service to Mother Cow, is the easiest way to become selfless. Serving her in person, or by health or wealth, can redeem us. Sri Krishna has given the message of serving the Mother cow. His life as a Gopal proves it. Serving all the creations and creatures of the planet is another option. Even, these actions should not be adorned by the tag of “I”.

We may prefer doing wrong deeds, while chanting the Name. It is completely wrong, as we do not feel the presence of Lord, when we chant. If we feel the presence of Allah, for even a millisecond in a day, we can spend a virtuous day. Whenever we tend to categorize our jobs into good or bad, the jobs were or will be out of selfishness. We should think before we perform any action, and surrender at the Divine feet.

This practice does not need Himalayan ranges, as our hermitage. Every breath and action should be selfless, even a in a householder’s life. Householder’s life is the best life. If actions become selfless, we will be truly blissful. Some say that performing rites and rituals is their responsibility. If the rites are recited with the reasoning of righteousness; for the sake of welfare of all beings, then we can be free, or else bondages are in plethora in our banks.
