Paryushan Parva Day 10

Uttam Brahmacharya or Supreme Celibacy/Chastity

In our journey towards self-realization, we have explored how vairagya (detachment) serves as the foundation for practicing key virtues such as shaucha (purity), satya (truth), samyam (restraint), tapasya (penance), and tyaga (renunciation). These virtues in turn lead us to a life filled with kshama (forbearance), mardava (humility), and aarjava (simplicity and honesty).

Yet, when this path of detachment is combined with brahmacharya (celibacy), it becomes even more powerful—a true culmination of spiritual discipline.

On the 10th day of Paryushana, we focus on Uttam Brahmacharya or Supreme Celibacy, the final and essential virtue that embodies the core of all virtues. To truly practice brahmacharya means to uproot all desires from the heart. When we free ourselves from desires, the evils of life naturally dissipate, leaving us with a heart that is pure and unburdened.

The word brahma signifies the soul, which is pure, enlightened, eternal, and blissful. Charya refers to conduct or behavior. Thus, brahmacharya is the conduct that allows us to remain fully absorbed in the Self, free from the distractions of worldly desires.

In its deepest sense, brahmacharya is not merely physical celibacy but a comprehensive spiritual discipline. It is the code of conduct that leads to the realization of the true Self (Atman). To practice supreme celibacy is to focus entirely on the soul’s journey, eliminating distractions that arise from sensual or material desires.

By following this path of supreme celibacy, we move closer to the ultimate goal of self-realization, where the soul exists in its purest, most enlightened state, full of bliss and free from worldly entanglements. This is the essence of brahmacharya—a life dedicated to the highest spiritual fulfillment.
