Raja Janak Ji and Sukhdev Ji

Today’s story is about Raja Janak Ji and Sukhdev Ji. Sukhdev Ji was the son of Vedvyas Ji. He attained spiritual knowledge in his mother’s womb and spent his childhood meditating in jungles.

One day, while meditating, he thought about going to Vaykunth and meeting Vishnu Ji. Vishnu Ji’s gatekeeper stopped him and said, “A person without a guru cannot enter Vaykunth.”

Sukhdev Ji, with disappointment, comes back to his father.

He said, “Why do I need to have a guru? I am the son of a great Krishi. I have done so much Tap and Sadhana. Now I only wish to attain Moksha, but I have been sent to look for a Guru.”

Vedvyas Ji said, “If Bhagwan has said, then you have to do it. In this world, only one person can be your guru, Raja Janak Ji. You go to him and make him your guru.”

Listening to this, Sukhdev Ji started thinking, “How can I make a Raja my Guru? A Raja is living his worldly life. What is common between a king and a sage?”

He has to follow Bhagwan’s order, so he goes to Raja Janak.

Raja Janak already has an intuition that Sukhdev Ji is coming. So, he planned a test for him.

Sukhdev Ji reaches there and introduces himself as the son of the great Krishi Vedvyas Ji.

He says, “I have done Tapasya for so many years. I don’t need a guru, but do you have the honor of becoming my guru? I would like to give you this honor.”

Raja Janak’s Ji said, “No one can become Sanyasi without going through the stages of life. A person has to go through different stages, and those are Brahmacharya, Grihastha Ashram, Vanaprastha, and then Sanyas Ashram. After passing all these stages, you can become Sanyasi.”

Sukhdev Ji said, “I am already detached from everything. Why should I create a new problem for myself? I wish to have Moksha only.”

Suddenly a minster of Raja Janak comes running and says, “Maharaj, fire is caught up in the whole kingdom, and now it is spreading fast towards the palace.”

Raja Janak Ji smiled and said, “Whatever God’s wish.”

The conversation between Raja Janak Ji and Sukhdev Ji continued.

After some time, the minister came again and said, “Maharaj, the fire has intensified and now reached the palace.”

Again, Raja Janak Ji smiled and said, “Whatever God’s wish.”

Listening to Raja Janak Ji, Sukhdev Ji thought, “He is a stupid Raja. How can he become my guru? I should save my life and run from here.”

He picked up his things and started running.

Raja Janak Ji stopped him and said, “As soon as you heard about the fire, you picked up your stuff and started running. Your first instinct was to run away. My whole kingdom is burning, but I still accepted it as God’s wish. Who is the bigger renunciant? You or me?”

Sukhdev Ji understood that Raja Janak Ji was a great saint, and he lay down at his feet and started asking for forgiveness. He said, “Please make me your disciple.”

Raja Janak Ji says, “You do not deserve to be my disciple. You have used your father’s approach to come here. If you pass my test, then you can become my disciple.”

He gives Sukhdev Ji a bowl full of oil and tells him, “You have to examine every room in my palace. Observe every activity going on in the palace. If a single drop of oil falls, I will kill you.”

Sukhdev Ji came back in an hour and said, “I have not let a single drop of oil fall, but I could not observe anything because my complete concentration was in this bowl.”

Raja Janak Ji said, “This was not my order. You had to observe every activity happening in the palace. So go back and do it again.”

So, he went back, and this time he took ten hours to examine everything carefully. He comes back and tells him everything that happened in the palace. He did this without spilling a single drop of oil.

Raja Janak Ji accepted him as his disciple and became his guru.

A person said, “Happy International Yoga Day to everyone. I have to think about what I have learned from this story. It showed how Janak Ji shattered Sukhdev Ji’s ego. Sukhdev Ji realized that a king could be a saint. But I didn’t understand the significance of him walking with the oil bowl.”

A girl said, “For me, the interpretation of bowl and oil was that the bowl was death and oil was mind. Other activities happening in the palace signify this world. If we work as representatives of God and surrender ourselves to him, then everything happens on its own. As human beings, we have to fulfill our responsibilities with the utmost care, but our minds should never deviate from God. In a single moment, if the mind deviated from God, it meant death for Raja Janak. That’s why he gave the punishment of death to Sukhdev Ji if a single drop of oil spilled over. Our minds should always be focused on God.” Alif asked, “The second time when he went with the oil lamp, why didn’t the oil get spilled?” She said, “Because he was surrendered this time.” Alif said, “Ok. So, he surrendered to Raja Janak and then went to do his task.”

Alif asked the first person again.

He said, “This is a convincing explanation. I am trying to understand it.” Alif said, “You started by wishing everyone a happy International Yog Day. You have understood the meaning of yog and international. Now let’s come to this nation, which is our body. The important thing for me is that my mind should be focused on the soul. We cannot see our minds, and we cannot understand it. The soul and mind becoming one is Yog. There, it is shown that Raja Janak has everything, but he is not attached. We also have everything, but we are attached to it and even to our bodies. We are scared of death. To get rid of the attachment to the body, a guru is needed. The Guru tells us that we are not this body or mind; we are the soul. It is easy to say this, but to experience it is difficult. Sukhdev Ji was the level of the recipient; he could understand what Raja Janak was from inside. He realized that Raja Janak was not even attached to his own body. When he got to know Raja Janak, Sukhdev Ji surrendered himself to his feet. The essence is that the life of a householder is the best. While living life like a householder, your mind should be focused on God. Raja Janak Ji made Sukhdev Ji experience this by giving him the task of carrying an oil lamp. Sukhdev Ji wished to become a Sanyasi without going through all of these, but to become a Sanyasi, one has to go through all the stages of life. Raja Janak Ji made him experience household life within ten hours because Sukhdev Ji was ready for that level. People who think that if they do not interact with others, they will be secure have the wrong attitude. You have to accept or reject anyone. When we wear the clothes of a Sanyas and try to become one, we try to reject the world. But from within, we are unable to let go. The mind is still in the world. Here, the importance of a guru is shown. How a Guru made Sukhdev Ji a real sanyasi. Now you tell me what you understood from this.” He said, “Yes, it is true. The second he followed exactly what had been said to him, he could see the truth. This was a good example of how to live in this world and still keep the mind focused on God.” Alif said, “In the story, the recipient was ready, so the guru made him realize this in only ten hours. When Ashtrawkara Ji came as a Guru in Janak Ji’s life, he realized himself within a millisecond. In the third example, the guru of Vayragyavati was a thief, but she realized herself. Guru could be any, but disciple should be ready.”

A lady said, “From today’s story, I have learned that while living in this world, I should not get affected by it. I have to learn detachment.” Alif asked, “How will it happen?” She answered, “By focusing my mind towards the soul.” Alif said, “That is also difficult. You need to have faith in God. Whenever ego comes up, forgive yourself and be thankful to God for making you realize it. Keep on offering the three flowers. For the mothers and women who live a household life, this is an easy way. We cannot sit for long hours to meditate, but by following this route, we can reach God. Being detached is not in your hands. What we can do is continuously bend our minds toward divine feet. We should do whatever is in our hands. The magnet of God is so strong that we automatically become detached.”

Alif said, “As soon as the story ended, I asked the girl, ‘Was it Sukhdev Ji’s story?’. For me, accepting Sukhdev Ji like this was slightly difficult. For me, Sukhdev means God himself. Even if it is Vishu Ji, Shiv Ji in human form, or even Sukhdev Ji, who was born as a guru, he still has to go through the test. They are born with the mind, so they are also tested on the level of the mind. The difficulty level for them is very high. For a simple human being, it is easy because they can say we do not deserve it. Jesus also got crucified because he was born as a human. If you have taken birth from the mother’s womb, you will have to die. Janak Ji has to prove himself Vidahi to people. People do not used to trust him. Ram Ji came to his house without an invitation. Maa Jagdamba was his daughter; still, he has to go through the test.”

आज की कहानी राजा जनक जी और सुखदेव जी की है। सुखदेव जी वेदव्यास जी के पुत्र थे। उन्होंने अपनी मां के गर्भ में आध्यात्मिक ज्ञान प्राप्त किया और अपना बचपन जंगलों में ध्यान करते हुए बिताया।

एक दिन ध्यान करते हुए उन्होंने वैकुंठ जाकर विष्णु जी से मिलने के बारे में सोचा। विष्णु जी के द्वारपाल ने उन्हें रोकते हुए कहा, “गुरु के बिना व्यक्ति वैकुंठ में प्रवेश नहीं कर सकता।

सुखदेव जी निराशा के साथ अपने पिता के पास वापस आते हैं।

उन्होंने कहा, “मुझे गुरु की आवश्यकता क्यों है? मैं एक महान कृषि का पुत्र हूं। मैंने बहुत कुछ किया है। अब मैं केवल मोक्ष प्राप्त करना चाहता हूं, लेकिन मुझे गुरु की तलाश में भेजा गया है।

वेदव्यास जी ने कहा कि यदि भगवान ने कहा है तो आपको करना ही पड़ेगा। इस संसार में केवल एक ही व्यक्ति आपका गुरु हो सकता है, राजा जनक जी। तुम उनके पास जाकर गुरु बनाओ।

यह सुनकर सुखदेव जी सोचने लगे कि मैं एक राजा को अपना गुरु कैसे बना सकता हूं? एक राजा अपना सांसारिक जीवन जी रहा है। एक राजा और एक ऋषि के बीच क्या समानता है?

उसे भगवान के आदेश का पालन करना होता है, इसलिए वह राजा जनक के पास जाता है।

राजा जनक को पहले से ही अंतर्ज्ञान है कि सुखदेव जी आ रहे हैं। इसलिए, उन्होंने उसके लिए एक परीक्षण की योजना बनाई।

सुखदेव जी वहां पहुंचकर अपना परिचय महान कृषि वेदव्यास जी के पुत्र के रूप में देते हैं।

वह कहते हैं, “मैंने इतने सालों तक तपस्या की है। मुझे गुरु की आवश्यकता नहीं है, लेकिन क्या आपको मेरे गुरु बनने का सम्मान है? मैं आपको यह सम्मान देना चाहता हूं।

राजा जनक जी ने कहा, “जीवन के पड़ावों से गुजरे बिना कोई भी संन्यासी नहीं बन सकता। एक व्यक्ति को विभिन्न चरणों से गुजरना पड़ता है, और वे ब्रह्मचर्य, गृहस्थ आश्रम, वानप्रस्थ और फिर संन्यास आश्रम हैं। इन सभी चरणों को पार करने के बाद, आप संन्यासी बन सकते हैं।

सुखदेव जी ने कहा कि मैं तो पहले से ही हर चीज से न्यारा हूं। मुझे अपने लिए एक नई समस्या क्यों पैदा करनी चाहिए? मैं केवल मोक्ष चाहता हूं।

अचानक राजा जनक का एक मंत्री दौड़ता हुआ आता है और कहता है, “महाराज, पूरे राज्य में आग लग गई है, और अब यह महल की ओर तेजी से फैल रही है।

राजा जनक जी मुस्कुराए और बोले, “जो भी भगवान की इच्छा हो।

राजा जनक जी और सुखदेव जी के बीच बातचीत चलती रही।

कुछ देर बाद मंत्री फिर आया और बोला, “महाराज, आग तेज हो गई है और अब महल तक पहुंच गई है।

पुनः राजा जनक जी मुस्कुराए और बोले, “ईश्वर की जो भी इच्छा हो।

राजा जनक जी की बात सुनकर सुखदेव जी ने सोचा, “ये तो बेवकूफ राजा हैं। वह मेरा गुरु कैसे बन सकता है? मुझे अपनी जान बचाकर यहां से भाग जाना चाहिए।

उसने अपना सामान उठाया और दौड़ने लगा।

राजा जनक जी ने उसे रोकते हुए कहा, “आग लगते ही तुमने अपना सामान उठा लिया और भागने लगे। आपकी पहली प्रवृत्ति भागने की थी। मेरा पूरा राज्य जल रहा है, लेकिन मैंने फिर भी इसे परमेश्वर की इच्छा के रूप में स्वीकार कर लिया है। सबसे बड़ा संन्यासी कौन है? आप या मैं?”

सुखदेव जी समझ गए कि राजा जनक जी महान संत हैं, और वे उनके चरणों में लेट गए और क्षमा याचना करने लगे। उन्होंने कहा, “कृपया मुझे अपना शिष्य बनाएं।

राजा जनक जी कहते हैं, “तुम मेरे शिष्य होने के लायक नहीं हो। आपने यहां आने के लिए अपने पिता के दृष्टिकोण का उपयोग किया है। यदि आप मेरी परीक्षा पास करते हैं, तो आप मेरे शिष्य बन सकते हैं।

वह सुखदेव जी को तेल से भरा कटोरा देते हैं और उनसे कहते हैं, “आपको मेरे महल के हर कमरे की जांच करनी होगी। महल में होने वाली हर गतिविधि का निरीक्षण करें। यदि तेल की एक भी बूंद गिरती है, तो मैं तुम्हें मार दूंगा।

सुखदेव जी एक घंटे में वापस आए और बोले, “मैंने तेल की एक बूंद भी गिरने नहीं दी, लेकिन मैं कुछ भी नहीं देख सका क्योंकि मेरा पूरा ध्यान इस कटोरे में था।

राजा जनक जी ने कहा कि यह मेरा आदेश नहीं था। महल में होने वाली हर गतिविधि पर नजर रखनी होती थी। तो वापस जाओ और इसे फिर से करो।

इसलिए, वह वापस चला गया, और इस बार उसने सब कुछ ध्यान से जांचने में दस घंटे लगाए। वह वापस आता है और उसे महल में हुई हर बात बताता है। उसने तेल की एक भी बूंद गिराए बिना ऐसा किया।

राजा जनक जी ने उन्हें अपना शिष्य स्वीकार किया और उनके गुरु बन गए।

प्रतिक्रियाएँ –

एक व्यक्ति ने कहा, “सभी को अंतर्राष्ट्रीय योग दिवस की शुभकामनाएं। मुझे सोचना होगा कि मैंने इस कहानी से क्या सीखा है। इसमें दिखाया गया कि जनक जी ने सुखदेव जी के अहंकार को कैसे चकनाचूर कर दिया। सुखदेव जी को एहसास हुआ कि राजा संत भी हो सकता है। लेकिन मुझे तेल के कटोरे के साथ चलने का महत्व समझ में नहीं आया।

एक लड़की ने कहा, “मेरे लिए, कटोरे और तेल की व्याख्या यह थी कि कटोरा मौत था और तेल मन था। महल में होने वाली अन्य गतिविधियाँ इस दुनिया को दर्शाती हैं। यदि हम ईश्वर के प्रतिनिधि के रूप में काम करते हैं और खुद को उसके सामने समर्पित कर देते हैं, तो सब कुछ अपने आप हो जाता है। मनुष्य के रूप में, हमें अपनी जिम्मेदारियों को अत्यंत सावधानी से पूरा करना होगा, लेकिन हमारे मन को कभी भी ईश्वर से विचलित नहीं होना चाहिए। एक क्षण में यदि मन परमात्मा से भटक गया तो उसका अर्थ था राजा जनक के लिए मृत्यु। इसलिए उन्होंने तेल की एक भी बूंद छलकने पर सुखदेव जी को मौत की सजा दे दी। हमारा मन हमेशा ईश्वर पर केंद्रित होना चाहिए। अलिफ़ ने पूछा, “दूसरी बार जब वह तेल का दीपक लेकर गया था, तो तेल क्यों नहीं गिरा?” उसने कहा, “क्योंकि वह इस बार आत्मसमर्पण कर दिया गया था। अलिफ़ ने कहा, “ठीक है। इसलिए, उन्होंने राजा जनक के सामने आत्मसमर्पण कर दिया और फिर अपना काम करने चले गए।

अलिफ़ ने पहले व्यक्ति से फिर पूछा।

उन्होंने कहा, “यह एक विश्वसनीय व्याख्या है। मैं इसे समझने की कोशिश कर रहा हूं। अलिफ़ ने कहा, “आपने सभी को अंतर्राष्ट्रीय योग दिवस की शुभकामनाएं देकर शुरुआत की। योग और इंटरनेशनल का मतलब समझ में आ गया है। अब इस देश पर आते हैं, जो हमारा शरीर है। मेरे लिए महत्वपूर्ण बात यह है कि मेरा मन आत्मा पर केंद्रित होना चाहिए। हम अपने मन को नहीं देख सकते हैं, और हम इसे समझ नहीं सकते हैं। आत्मा और मन एक हो जाना ही योग है। वहाँ दिखाया जाता है कि राजा जनक के पास सब कुछ है, लेकिन वह आसक्त नहीं है। हमारे पास भी सब कुछ है, लेकिन हम इससे और यहां तक कि अपने शरीर से भी जुड़े हुए हैं। हम मौत से डरते हैं। शरीर की मोह से मुक्ति के लिए गुरु चाहिए। गुरु हमें बताते हैं कि हम यह शरीर या मन नहीं हैं; हम आत्मा हैं। यह कहना सहज है, लेकिन अनुभव करना कठिन है। सुखदेव जी प्राप्तकर्ता के स्तर के थे; वह समझ सकता था कि राजा जनक अंदर से क्या थे। उन्होंने महसूस किया कि राजा जनक को अपने शरीर से भी लगाव नहीं था। जब उन्हें राजा जनक का पता चला तो सुखदेव जी ने खुद को उनके चरणों में समर्पित कर दिया। सार यह है कि गृहस्थ का जीवन सबसे अच्छा है। गृहस्थ की तरह जीवन जीते समय आपका मन ईश्वर पर केंद्रित होना चाहिए। राजा जनक जी ने सुखदेव जी को तेल का दीपक ढोने का काम देकर इसका अनुभव कराया। सुखदेव जी इन सब से गुजरे बिना संन्यासी बनना चाहते थे, लेकिन संन्यासी बनने के लिए जीवन के सभी पड़ावों से गुजरना पड़ता है। राजा जनक जी ने उन्हें दस घंटे के भीतर गृहस्थ जीवन का अनुभव कराया क्योंकि सुखदेव जी उस स्तर के लिए तैयार थे। जो लोग सोचते हैं कि यदि वे दूसरों के साथ बातचीत नहीं करते हैं, तो वे सुरक्षित रहेंगे, उनका रवैया गलत होगा। आपको किसी को भी स्वीकार या अस्वीकार करना होगा। जब हम संन्यास के कपड़े पहनते हैं और एक बनने की कोशिश करते हैं, तो हम दुनिया को अस्वीकार करने की कोशिश करते हैं। लेकिन भीतर से, हम जाने देने में असमर्थ हैं। मन अभी भी दुनिया में है। यहाँ गुरु का महत्व दिखाया गया है। कैसे एक गुरु ने सुखदेव जी को सच्चा संन्यासी बनाया। अब तुम मुझे बताओ कि तुमने इससे क्या समझा। उन्होंने कहा, “हां, यह सच है। दूसरा उसने वही किया जो उससे कहा गया था, वह सच्चाई देख सकता था। यह इस दुनिया में रहने का एक अच्छा उदाहरण था और फिर भी मन को भगवान पर केंद्रित रखा जाए। अलिफ़ ने कहा, “कहानी में लेने वाला तैयार था, इसलिए गुरु ने उसे केवल दस घंटे में इस बात का एहसास करा दिया। जनक जी के जीवन में जब अष्टाचार जी गुरु बनकर आए तो उन्होंने एक मिलीसेकंड में ही खुद को साकार कर लिया। तीसरे उदाहरण में, वैराग्यवती के गुरु एक चोर थे, लेकिन उन्होंने खुद को महसूस किया। गुरु कोई भी हो सकता है, लेकिन शिष्य तैयार होना चाहिए।

एक महिला ने कहा, “आज की कहानी से, मैंने सीखा है कि इस दुनिया में रहते हुए, मुझे इससे प्रभावित नहीं होना चाहिए। मुझे वैराग्य सीखना है। अलिफ़ ने पूछा, “यह कैसे होगा?” उन्होंने उत्तर दिया, “आत्मा की ओर अपना मन केंद्रित करके। अलिफ़ ने कहा, “यह भी मुश्किल है। आपको भगवान में विश्वास रखने की जरूरत है। जब भी अहंकार ऊपर आता है, तो अपने आप को क्षमा करें और आपको इसका एहसास कराने के लिए भगवान का आभारी रहें। तीनों फूल चढ़ाते रहें। गृहस्थ जीवन जीने वाली माताओं और महिलाओं के लिए यह एक आसान तरीका है। हम ध्यान करने के लिए लंबे समय तक नहीं बैठ सकते हैं, लेकिन इस मार्ग का पालन करके हम भगवान तक पहुंच सकते हैं। न्यारा बनना तुम्हारे हाथ में नहीं है। हम जो कर सकते हैं वह लगातार हमारे मन को दिव्य चरणों की ओर झुकाता है। हमारे हाथ में जो कुछ भी है हमें करना चाहिए। परमात्मा का चुंबक इतना मजबूत है कि हम स्वतः ही न्यारे हो जाते हैं।

अलिफ़ ने कहा, “जैसे ही कहानी खत्म हुई, मैंने लड़की से पूछा, ‘क्या यह सुखदेव जी की कहानी थी?’। मेरे लिए सुखदेव जी को इस तरह स्वीकार करना थोड़ा मुश्किल था। मेरे लिए सुखदेव का मतलब खुद भगवान है। भले ही वह विशु जी हों, मानव रूप में शिव जी हों, या गुरु के रूप में जन्म लेने वाले सुखदेव जी भी हों, फिर भी उन्हें परीक्षा से गुजरना पड़ता है। वे मन के साथ पैदा होते हैं, इसलिए मन के स्तर पर भी उनकी परीक्षा ली जाती है। उनके लिए कठिनाई का स्तर बहुत अधिक है। एक साधारण इंसान के लिए, यह आसान है क्योंकि वे कह सकते हैं कि हम इसके लायक नहीं हैं। यीशु को भी सूली पर चढ़ाया गया क्योंकि वह एक इंसान के रूप में पैदा हुए थे। यदि आपने माता के गर्भ से जन्म लिया है, तो आपको मरना होगा। जनक जी को जनता के सामने खुद को विदही साबित करना है। लोग उस पर भरोसा नहीं करते थे। राम जी बिना निमंत्रण के उनके घर आ गए। माँ जगदम्बा उनकी पुत्री थीं; फिर भी, उसे परीक्षा से गुजरना होगा।
