A saint named Samarth Ramdas used to chant the name and participate eagerly in holy prayers. But, later, he began remaining silent in prayers. He often made sure that his disciples chanted the name, with due lip-synching. Whenever he found a disciple not chanting, he often punished him, though in a mild tone. One day, a young man asked him, “You often ask us to chant the name, but you never do so. When we chant, all can see our lips moving, but you remain dumb.” Ramdas Ji said, “One day, I went to see the king, who was coming with his grand procession. I was eager, but I even saw an emaciated beggar, in ragged clothes. The beggar was lucky and the king saw him at first glance. The king asked about his needs, which he wished for from the king. The beggar said that he needed nothing as the king didn’t know the needs of his subject, despite seeing the subject’s condition. The king gave an annoying look but realized that the beggar opened his eyes. The king asked his kingsmen to arrange the best clothing, food, and shelter for the beggar and ensured that none of his subjects remained hungry in his kingdom. Observing the condition, I realized that God knows my needs. I need to merely present myself at the altar. God is more than a king. When I am standing in front of Him, He knows my needs. When I chit-chat a lot, I disturb Him.” The young man asked, “You may feel that God knows your mind and he cherishes your needs, then why do you ask us to chant?” Samarth Ramdas Ji said, “You don’t have complete faith that you receive everything without pleading. By repeating the name, you will reach to that stage.”

समर्थ रामदास नाम के एक संत नाम जपते थे और पवित्र प्रार्थनाओं में उत्सुकता से भाग लेते थे। लेकिन बाद में वह प्रार्थना में चुप रहने लगे। वे अक्सर यह सुनिश्चित किया करते थे कि उनके शिष्य उचित रूप से बिन स्वरित जप किये मुख से उच्चारण करते हुए नाम का जाप करते हुए दिखें। जब भी वे किसी शिष्य को जप न करते हुए पाया करते थे, तो वे अक्सर उसे दंड देते थे, भले ही वह कोमल स्वर में हो। एक दिन एक युवक ने उनसे पूछा, “आप अक्सर हमें नाम जपने के लिए कहते हैं, लेकिन आप ऐसा कभी नहीं करते। जब हम जप करते हैं, तो सभी को हमारे होंठ हिलते दिखाई देते हैं, लेकिन आप मूक बने रहते हैं।” रामदास जी ने कहा कि एक दिन मैं राजा को देखने गया, जो अपनी भव्य बारात लेकर आ रहा था। मैं उत्सुक था, लेकिन मैंने एक क्षीण भिखारी को भी देखा, फटे-पुराने कपड़ों में। भिखारी भाग्यशाली था और राजा ने उसे पहले देखा। राजा ने उसकी जरूरतों के बारे में पूछा, जो वह राजा से चाहता था। भिखारी ने कहा कि उसे कुछ भी नहीं चाहिए क्योंकि प्रजा की स्थिति को देखने के बावजूद राजा को अपनी प्रजा की जरूरतों के बारे में पता नहीं था। राजा ने एक कष्टप्रद रूप दिया लेकिन भिखारी ने उनकी आँखें खोल दी थीं। राजा ने अपने राजाओं से भिखारी के लिए सबसे अच्छे कपड़े, भोजन और आश्रय की व्यवस्था करने को कहा और यह सुनिश्चित किया कि उसके राज्य में उसकी कोई भी प्रजा वैसे न रहे। हालात देखकर, मुझे एहसास हुआ कि भगवान मेरी जरूरतों को जानता है मुझे केवल अपने आप को दिव्य चरणों पर प्रस्तुत करने की आवश्यकता है। भगवान एक राजा से अधिक है। जब मैं उसके सामने खड़ा होता हूं, तो वह मेरी जरूरतों को जानता है। जब मैं बहुत अधिक बोलता हूं, तो मैं उसे परेशान करता हूं।” युवक ने पूछा, “आप महसूस कर सकते हैं कि भगवान आपके मन को जानते हैं और वह आपकी आवश्यकताओं को संजोते हैं, फिर आप हमें जप करने के लिए क्यों कहते हैं?” समर्थ रामदास जी ने कहा, “आपको पूरा विश्वास नहीं है कि बिना याचना के सब कुछ मिल जाता है। नाम जपने से आप उस अवस्था तक पहुँच जाएँगे।”
