The passing away of Buddha

He was old, he was suffering, he was near his death, and then came the despised outcaste—he lives on carrion, dead animals; the Hindus would not allow them to come into cities—one of these invited him to a dinner and he came with his disciples, and the poor man, he wanted to treat this great teacher according to what he thought would be best; so he had a lot of pig’s flesh and a lot of rice for him, and Buddha looked at that.

The disciples were all [hesitating], and the Master said: ‘Well, do not eat, you will be hurt.’ But he quietly sat down and ate. The teacher of equality must eat the [outcaste] man’s dinner, even the pig’s flesh. He sat down and ate it.

Buddha was already dying. Buddha found death coming on, and he said, ‘Spread for me something under this tree, for I think the end is near.’

And buddha was there under the tree, and he laid himself down; he could not sit up anymore. And the first thing he did, he said: ‘Go to that man and tell him that he has been one of my greatest benefactors; for his meal, I am going to Nirvana.’

And then several men came to be instructed, and a disciple said, ‘Do not go near now, the Master is passing away.’

And as soon as he heard it, the Lord said, ‘Let them come in.’

And somebody else came and the disciples would not [let them enter]. Again, they came, and then the dying Lord said: ‘I am passing away. Weep not for me. Think not for me. I am gone. Work out diligently for your own salvation. Each one of you is just what I am. I am nothing but one of you. What I am today is what I made myself. Do you struggle and make yourselves what I am. …’

Buddha has reached the stage where everyone is the same. For him, rice and pig were interchangeable. In the end, he demonstrated that if you treat others slightly differently than yourself, you are an idiot.

A lady said, “For me, it felt like the journey of being infinite from finite. When dualism is not present then it becomes infinite. We have not reached that stage yet so we see the pig as meat here.” Teacher asked, “Why did buddha give this teaching just before dying and not early on in his life?” The lady said, “He wanted to give final teaching that everyone is the same. Teacher said, “He wanted to prove to everyone that he got nirvana due to lower caste man. He wanted to spread the message that if you are differentiating you can never become one with God. In front of God everyone is the same then why are you differentiating?”

A boy said, “We have to see God in everyone. We have started on this path so one day we will be able to see God in everyone.” Teacher said, “Sri Shankaracharya had to drink the soup of a dog’s bone to save his life. The message here is that until you differentiate you will not become one with God. If we see God in others, we will become God himself.” The boy said, “We have to practice until we can see drinking water and gutter water as same.”

A lady said, “I still have a question why did he consume pig’s meat?” Teacher said, “To prove that everything is God’s.” The lady said, “Still?” Teacher said, “The question is in your thought but it was not in buddha’s thought. Buddha was one with God and he had no differentiating between anyone. He has seen God in everyone.” The lady said, “Ok, so he prayed and consumed the meat.” Teacher explained, “Let’s try to understand in a different way. A person who worships God sees himself and God as different entities. Buddha never prayed he was that. If you are that, why would you pray? To whom would you pray? Because you think you and God are different so you pray to him. Buddha is God himself then whom he would pray to? He can give.” The lady said, “I have to practice on it.”

A lady said, “From today’s story I felt that I am very far away from becoming one with God.” Teacher said, “Imagine a stick person standing at one end and thinking the other end is very far away and the other end is God himself. So why are you thinking you are far away God is with you and he is everywhere. It is just in our thoughts that we are far away.”

A lady said, “I have learned that I have to practice so much that we can love everyone equally like a buddha.” Teacher said, “Do you know why buddha was able to love everyone equally? Because he loved himself. He loved his soul. You just have to be in love with your soul then you can see everyone equally. Everyone is the same.”

एक लड़के ने कहा, “हमें हर किसी में भगवान देखना है। हमने इस रास्ते पर चलना शुरू कर दिया है इसलिए एक दिन हम सभी में भगवान को देख पाएंगे। शिक्षक ने कहा, “श्री शंकराचार्य को अपनी जान बचाने के लिए एक कुत्ते की हड्डी का सूप पीना पड़ा। यहाँ संदेश यह है कि जब तक आप अंतर नहीं करते हैं, तब तक आप भगवान के साथ एक नहीं बनेंगे। यदि हम दूसरों में परमेश्वर को देखते हैं, तो हम स्वयं परमेश्वर बन जाएँगे। लड़के ने कहा, “हमें तब तक अभ्यास करना होगा जब तक कि हम पीने के पानी और गटर के पानी को समान रूप से नहीं देख सकते।

एक महिला ने कहा, “मुझे अभी भी एक सवाल है कि उसने सुअर के मांस का सेवन क्यों किया? शिक्षक ने कहा, “यह साबित करने के लिए कि सब कुछ भगवान का है। महिला ने कहा, “फिर भी? शिक्षक ने कहा, “प्रश्न आपके विचार में है लेकिन यह बुद्ध के विचार में नहीं था। बुद्ध ईश्वर के साथ एक थे और उनका किसी के बीच कोई अंतर नहीं था। उन्होंने हर किसी में भगवान देखा है। महिला ने कहा, “ठीक है, इसलिए उसने प्रार्थना की और मांस का सेवन किया। शिक्षक ने समझाया, “चलो एक अलग तरीके से समझने की कोशिश करते हैं। एक व्यक्ति जो भगवान की पूजा करता है, वह खुद को और भगवान को अलग-अलग संस्थाओं के रूप में देखता है। बुद्ध ने कभी प्रार्थना नहीं की कि वह ऐसा ही था। यदि आप ऐसे हैं, तो आप प्रार्थना क्यों करेंगे? आप किससे प्रार्थना करेंगे? क्योंकि आपको लगता है कि आप और भगवान अलग हैं, इसलिए आप उससे प्रार्थना करते हैं। बुद्ध स्वयं भगवान हैं तो वह किससे प्रार्थना करेंगे? वह दे सकता है। महिला ने कहा, “मुझे इस पर अभ्यास करना है।

एक महिला ने कहा, “आज की कहानी से मुझे लगा कि मैं भगवान के साथ एक होने से बहुत दूर हूं। शिक्षक ने कहा, “कल्पना कीजिए कि एक छड़ी वाला व्यक्ति एक छोर पर खड़ा है और सोच रहा है कि दूसरा छोर बहुत दूर है और दूसरा छोर स्वयं भगवान है। तो आप क्यों सोच रहे हैं कि आप बहुत दूर हैं भगवान आपके साथ है और वह हर जगह है। यह सिर्फ हमारे विचारों में है कि हम बहुत दूर हैं।

एक महिला ने कहा, “मैंने सीखा है कि मुझे इतना अभ्यास करना होगा कि हम सभी को बुद्ध की तरह समान रूप से प्यार कर सकें। शिक्षक ने कहा, “क्या आप जानते हैं कि बुद्ध सभी को समान रूप से प्यार करने में सक्षम क्यों थे? क्योंकि वह खुद से प्यार करता था। वह अपनी आत्मा से प्यार करता था। आपको बस अपनी आत्मा के साथ प्यार में होना है फिर आप सभी को समान रूप से देख सकते हैं। हर कोई एक जैसा है।
