Little prankster, playing in the lanes and soils of Vrindavan was born several years ago. Let us recapitulate the events and search for the hidden spiritual answers to our basic questions about knowing the Self.
Let us keep our minds clean from all the filth of previous acknowledgments and indentations of classical Janmaashtami stories, and feel the presence of Krishna in this moment.
Lord Krishna was born to Mother Devaki and Vasudev Ji. Mother Devaki was the sister of King Kans of Mathura. The virtues of the family were unquestionable. The love between the siblings was commendable. Once, King Kans arranged the marriage of his sister, Devaki, with his beloved friend, Vasudev. The marriage ceremony ended up, storing happy memories in all. But, something better was waiting in disguise. After the ceremony, Kans was taking Devaki to Vasudev’s place. As they were on the chariot, a revelation resonated in the air from the skies. The command proclaimed that the eighth son of Mother Devaki and Vasudev Ji would kill Kans. Kans was horrified. He turned the chariot towards his palace, in disgust. Back home, he prisoned Mother Devaki and Vasudev Ji. He asked them to surrender their babies to him, as they were born. Mother Devaki and Vasudev Ji were virtuous. They always kept Lord in their breathes and palpitations. They were always thankful.
The first child was born. Kans thought that the infant would be harmless, as he was the first one, and the eighth one was harmful. As this thought rose in his mind, Narad Ji was sent to Kans to change his mind, for his sins could rise, sufficient enough to ensure Kans’s death. He descended from the heavens with a flower and reminded Kans about the proclamation. He asked Kans to count the petals of the cyclic whorl of the flower. As he counted, he got several opportunities to drop to same petal with different counting. Narad Ji suggested that any child of Mother Devaki could be the eighth according to the Divine proclamation. Kans was convinced and killed six babies incessantly. Mother Devaki and Vasudev Ji were always thankful.
As the seventh fetus was flourishing in the womb, Mother felt an unusual delight, as a divine being was fostering within her. She prayed to Lord about the incessant deaths of all the children and asked for the ways to get away from the fix. Narayan took an opulent form and announced that He would be the elder brother of Sri Krishna, Dau Balaram Ji. The later Balaram Ji was transferred from the womb of Mother Devaki to that of Rohini Ji, sister of Yasoda Maiyaa. The seventh son received by Kans was merely a dummy of morsel, as the essence was saved as Balaram Ji. Then, Janmaashtami came.
The time of arrival of the incarnation was near. Narayan took a magnificent form and gave vision to Mother Devaki and Vasudev Ji. He said that He would be born through them but He would soon disappear, and consoled them, for they are freed from worries. Narayan disappeared. As the night sky experienced the grand midnight, the baby was born. But, something special was awaiting. Suddenly, all the guards who were agile to send the message of the birth of the baby to Kans, went into deep slumber. Even, Kans fell asleep. All the cuffs and chains of Mother Devaki and Vasudev Ji were unchained, prison bars moved apart, all the gates and doors of the palace opened agape. Little Sri Krishna hushed to His parents and asked His father to take Him to Nanda Baba’s place, and bring their daughter to present before Kans. Vasudev Ji asked about they could do such grave event. Sri Krishna consoled that She was His figment, Mahamaya. Mother Devaki moved her hands over her sons’ face and bid Him adieu. Vasudev Ji placed Sri Krishna in a basket and left for Nandgaon. As they left the borders of Mathura, they faced the River Yamuna, which was flooded out of gravity. Vasudev Ji ventured the waters and tried to balance the basket, for the baby may not drown. The water levels were high enough to submerge a grand ship. Soon, Sri Krishna took off His feet out of the basket and a gentle flow of blessing to Mother Yamuna calmed her. The journey across the Yamuna was smooth. They reached Nandagaon. A little baby girl was lying in the cradle beside Mother Yashoda. Amidst the darkness, Vasudev Ji slipped Sri Krishna on the cradle, and took the baby girl back to Mathura. As he returned. the gates began shutting with thunder, and the guards became agile again, and Kans came to the prison. He took the baby up and tried to kill her, but She disappeared into nothing. The same proclamation resonated in the air which hailed the safe birth of the boy who was the angel of death.
