Rabia Basri and Hasan Basri

✦ ❋ ✦

The Story

Once upon a time, Rabia Basri was sitting under a tree in a forest. All the animals and birds of the forest had come and settled around her.

There was no sound. Rabia was not speaking, no bird was chirping, and no animal was stirring. Everyone was immersed in peace, love and bliss. Rabia was not even doing anything. She simply was, and by her very presence the whole forest had grown still.

After a while, another saint, Hasan Basri, came along the same path. The moment he stepped into the forest, all the animals and birds fled in fear. The birds flew away, the animals leapt into the bushes and vanished, and in an instant the place was empty.

Hasan was astonished. He asked Rabia, “What is this? When you were sitting here, everyone sat calmly beside you. When I came, they all ran away. Why did this happen?”

Rabia smiled and said, “Don’t ask me this. Ask yourself. Go within and ask.”

The Lesson of the Story

The music of stillness…

Rabia was sitting beneath a tree,
All the animals sat there too, yet no storm of noise could be.

A great stillness filled the forest, a blissful, intoxicating peace,
The radiance of Radha, Krishna, Buddha, Mahavir, Nanak and Meera, never to cease.

Every mind had gone into hiding, in the soul’s secret place,
That very energy of the mind, which once ran restless, or spun like a top in endless chase.

There was no thirst, no hope, no speculation, no striving there,
All were different in form, yet within, only a fast, a stillness, everywhere.

No one was sad, no one mocked, no one was frantic or distressed,
Only the Divine’s abode, and a sky of joy, blessed.

In Hasan’s breath lay the feeling of pain,
Fear and terror lingered, and a history of violence in its reign.

From this story we learned: may the mind be in harmony with the soul,
May the light of true renunciation make us whole,
May the fragrance of love and unity spread wide.

May the sweetness of kinship abide,
May there be room simply to be,
May a deep inner joy run free,
May the innocence of the palash bloom.
