The Story

Prophet Muhammad used to walk through a certain lane every day. In the upper part of a house on that lane lived an old woman. For some unknown reason, she would pour garbage on him every day. The Prophet was never angry with her. He would quietly go home and clean himself.

This went on every day for many years. The old woman never stopped throwing garbage, and the Prophet never stopped taking that path. There was no reaction from him. He kept coming and going with his gentle, serene smile.

After many years, one day the old woman did not throw garbage on him. The Prophet asked the people nearby what had happened to her. They told him she was ill. The Prophet went to see her. She was very unwell and could not even sit up. The Prophet nursed her.

After some days, as she began to recover, the woman recognized that this was the very man she used to throw garbage on. She was overcome with guilt. She said, “What a terrible woman I am. I threw so much garbage on you, and you are taking care of me.”

The Prophet said, “It’s alright, Mother. You are a mother. You have always shown me love, and by loving you, I am simply living out that love of yours.”

The Essence of the Story

It is Allah alone who is the Doer…

Not the old woman’s tunic, nor the Prophet’s robe;
Recognize the true Doer.

Muhammad, the puppet, was led along the narrow, muddy path;
The old woman, the marionette, was made to pour garbage on his brow.

From within the Messenger, He alone smiled;
From within the old woman, He alone grumbled.

The Prophet’s gentle laughter came from the very place
Where Mata Ram’s growl came from.

Through the Prophet-machine, He had the service performed;
Through Ammijaan’s contraption, He arranged the guilt.

The colour of Mustafa’s gentleness comes from His own flask;
The scent of the old woman’s harshness comes from His own drum.

The treasure of Ahmad’s love must be sought in that very place;
The source of the old woman’s repentance lies hidden there too.
