Vairagyavati and the Thief Guru

✦ ❋ ✦

The Story

Long ago, in a certain kingdom, there lived a princess named Vairagyavati. From childhood her heart was steeped in devotion and detachment from worldly things. She wanted nothing but God.

The king and queen knew their daughter’s nature well. They never stopped her and instead fully supported her devotion. The princess had no interest in the comforts and luxuries of the palace, so the king had a small room built for her in one part of the palace and arranged a few attendants. Vairagyavati lived there, spending her days and nights in prayer and devotional singing.

One night, Vairagyavati was sitting outside her room when a band of thieves arrived. Their leader stepped forward and said, “Child, I am your guru.”

Hearing the word “guru,” Vairagyavati’s heart filled with joy. She bowed to him with great respect and seated him on a mat. The leader said, “Stay completely silent. Do not speak a single word.” Obeying her guru’s command, Vairagyavati fell silent.

The leader kept her talking while his gang quietly slipped into the palace and made off with every valuable they could find.

Then the leader said, “Now come with me. Walk wherever I lead you, but make no sound.” Vairagyavati already believed him to be her true guru, so she followed behind with complete surrender.

Deep in the forest, the leader tied her to a tree with rope and said, “Until I come and untie you myself, you will not be freed, not by anyone’s word. Sit here and silently chant Ram, Ram.” Then he left.

At dawn, the palace was in uproar. The princess was nowhere to be found. The king sent soldiers in every direction to search. At last, one soldier found her tied to a tree in the forest. When he tried to loosen the rope, Vairagyavati said, “No, I will not be untied. When my guru comes, he alone will free me.”

The soldier ran and told the king. The king came with his army, but Vairagyavati would not listen even to her father. Many attempts were made, and all were in vain.

Then Lord Narayan himself appeared and said, “Child, you may be freed now.”

Vairagyavati folded her hands and said, “Lord, I have received your darshan only by my guru’s grace. Only my guru can untie me.”

Narayan smiled. He summoned the sage Narad and said, “Go, find her guru and bring him here.”

Narad found the thief guru and brought him. Narad and Narayan began to scold him: “How deceitful and dishonest you are! You tormented this innocent princess through trickery.”

Hearing this, Vairagyavati cried out, “No, no! Please say nothing against my guru. It is because of him that I have seen you and the sage Narad. He is my true guru.”

Seeing such unshakable faith, the thief’s heart melted and tears flowed from his eyes. Through the princess’s devotion, even the thief received the vision of Narayan, and his life was transformed.

The Lesson — First Style

Devotion, faith and surrender…

Vairagyavati was an innocent princess,
The king and queen knew their daughter was dear.

God’s world is wondrous, strange and wild,
Adorned with tamas, rajas and sattva, this garden.

Her parents kept their gentle daughter safe,
Gave her a small home, in awe of her devotion.

One day Guru Ghantal appeared with a wondrous tale,
With his band of thieves he entered the palace in the dark of night.

Initiated by the thief-chief, the devotee gave up her life to him,
Through love, surrender and obedience, she at once refined herself.

Bound in the forest, she kept awaiting her guru,
Narad and Narayan were stunned; no one’s cleverness prevailed.

Together with her guru, she saw Narayan, what a beautiful partnership!
We learned obedience, and now we will not cheat.

The Lesson — Second Style

Another way of learning…

See the queen’s wonder, see the king’s care,
See the princess’s joy, see the rogue guru there.

See the girl clinging to the bark, beyond compare,
See the penniless thieves suddenly rich and fair.

See Narayan’s net and Narad’s despair,
See the lovely state of the follower, her devotion’s flair.

See love so vast, surrender in tatters,
See guru, Narad and Gopal,
See the disciple’s questions and answers.

Lift the web of illusion from your brow,
See the mint of love’s pure treasure now.
Filled with joy and gratitude,
See the entire sky and netherworld.
